The California National Guard (CANG) is a branch of the United States military that operates under both state and federal jurisdictions. It is part of the larger National Guard system, serving alongside the Army National Guard and Air National Guard of the other U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The CANG's mission encompasses a range of responsibilities, including domestic emergencies, counter-drug operations, protection of critical infrastructure, and state response to natural disasters. Under federal authority, they can be called upon for duties such as combat operations or homeland defense. The CANG maintains its own headquarters in Sacramento, California, and is administered jointly by the Governor of California and the Department of the Army.
