The Virginia National Guard (VANG) is a branch of the United States National Guard organized for state service under the authority of the governor of Virginia, and simultaneously for federal service under the command-in-chief of the President of the United States. It operates under Title 32 of the United States Code as a component of the National Guard of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is further subordinate to the Office of the Adjutant General of Virginia and the Department of Military Affairs. The Virginia National Guard is primarily composed of Army and Air Force components, with roles encompassing both domestic response and federal missions. Its soldiers and airmen train locally, deploy regionally, and can be mobilized nationally or globally when needed to support civil authorities, state agencies, the federal government, and to protect American interests abroad.
